Is Microneedling Safe in the Summer? What You Need to Know

Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) has become the go-to treatment for smoother, rejuvenated skin. It’s loved for its ability to boost collagen and tackle concerns like fine lines, scars and uneven texture, all with very little downtime.

But as the heat rolls in, you might be wondering: “Is microneedling safe in the summer?” The good news is that yes, you can enjoy the benefits of microneedling year-round, even in the sunniest season, as long as you take the right precautions.

How to Safely Receive Microneedling in the Summer

Microneedling is considered safe year-round, even during the hot, sunny months, as long as you give your skin a bit of extra TLC during the healing period. To help you stay protected, here are some simple tips to keep your skin safe after microneedling this summer:

  • Be sun-smart. Freshly microneedled skin is more sensitive to UV rays, so plan to minimize sun exposure before and after your treatment.
  • Stick to SPF and hydration. Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on your face every single day.
  • Time your appointment wisely. Schedule your summer microneedling session early in the day or mid-week so your skin has time to recover before your weekend plans.

LightRx offers two state-of-the-art microneedling options:

  • Venus Viva™, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency for deep collagen support and smoother texture.
  • Dermapen 4™, a new offering that uses rapid, precise micro-channels to stimulate collagen with minimal discomfort and downtime.

By following these guidelines and using our advanced technology, you get to enjoy smoother, fresher skin now, rather than waiting for sweater weather to roll back around!

What Microneedling Does to Your Skin

Microneedling uses a device with tiny, sterile needles to create micro-channels in your skin. These micro punctures signal your body to go into “repair mode,” ramping up production of collagen and elastin — proteins that keep your complexion firm, smooth and youthful.

As the new collagen does its thing, you’ll start to see a variety of microneedling benefits take shape over the following days and weeks, including:

  • More even tone
  • Minimized pores
  • Smoother skin texture
  • Improved appearance of scars
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles

This is where our treatments really shine. Our Venus Viva and Dermapen 4 treatments support all those benefits while keeping your comfort a priority.

Pre- and Post-Microneedling Summer Skincare Tips

A little prep and aftercare can go a long way in preserving your post-treatment glow. Use this cheat sheet to help care for your skin before and after microneedling, all while keeping your summer skincare on track.

Before Your Microneedling Session
  • Skip the sun and tanning bed. In the week leading up to your appointment, avoid active sun exposure or tanning (natural or artificial) on the area being treated.
  • Pause potent products. Stop using any strong skincare actives. This means no retinol, retinoids, exfoliating acids or aggressive scrubs.
  • Come in with clean skin. On the day of your appointment, arrive with a clean, makeup-free face. Avoid heavy creams or lotions that morning too. This way, your skin is a blank canvas and ready for microneedling.
After Your Microneedling Session
  • Avoid the sun for 48–72 hours. Plan to stay indoors or in the shade as much as possible. If you do need to step out, be sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat or even take an umbrella.
  • Diligent SPF and sun protection. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every morning, starting the day after your treatment.
  • Keep it gentle and hydrated. For the first few days after microneedling, baby your skin. Use a mild, hydrating cleanser (no scrubs or harsh beads) and slather on a gentle moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated.
  • Avoid heavy sweating, saunas, steam rooms and swimming pools for 24–48 hours after treatment. Use this as an excuse for some quality Netflix time on the couch.
  • Hold off on active skincare. Just as you paused the more active skincare products before treatment, you’ll want to wait a few days after to give your skin barrier time to recover. You can gradually reintroduce them once your provider gives the green light.

When Should You Avoid Microneedling in the Summer?

Microneedling isn’t ideal if you’ve got back-to-back beach days coming up. If you’re planning extended sun exposure, like a tropical vacation, hiking trip or summer sports, it’s better to wait until your schedule calms down.

Remember, you can always consult our Beauty Besties to figure out the best timing if you’re unsure.
