Our Top 5 Winter Skincare Tips | LightRx MedSpa

Is it winter already? Time to break out your puffy coat and boots because it’s going to be snowing before you know it! To help you prepare for the cold, dry weather, we’ve developed five winter skincare tips to get you through the season. Try them out for yourself and wave goodbye to your winter skin woes.

1. Protect your lips

Everyone has experienced Lip Eczema before – when your lips are chapped, and you just can’t stop licking them! Cool winter air, reduced humidity and windy weather can be a deadly combination for your lips, leaving them chapped and cracking. Eliminate Lip Eczema by ensuring your lips are sealed with a protective lip balm or another ointment at all times this season. Especially when eating or drinking something acidic like a tomato or pineapple, which can cause burning and irritation. Plus, you can give your lips a gentle scrub to remove dead skin cells and stimulate healthier skin cells to emerge. If you don’t have a scrub, try using an old toothbrush or a wet washcloth to keep your lips flake-free.

2. Modify your skincare regimen

Along with protecting your lips, it’s important to protect your skin during the cold winter months. Try using toners and astringents sparingly, or not at all. Most contain alcohol, which will dry out your skin, removing natural oils and leaving it itchy and flakey. It will also help if you cleanse your face at least once or twice a day. We suggest once in the morning and once at night, using a thin moisturizer in the day and a thicker one at night. Applying a heavy lotion or cream before bed will lock in the moisture, leaving your skin smooth and refreshed the next morning. Jan Marini Skin Care offers some of our favorites!

3. Don’t wear wet clothes for too long

With snow in the air and on the ground, staying dry during the winter is a difficult task. Make sure to remove any wet gloves, socks or pants as soon as you possibly can. Wearing wet clothes and shoes can irritate your skin and cause itchiness. Try carrying an extra pair of socks with you or even a second pair of pants if you anticipate getting wet. Additionally, it’s crucial to stay inside when your skin is damp. After washing your hands or taking a shower, avoid stepping outside. Exposing yourself to the cold, dry weather while you’re still wet will result in chapped, cracking skin.

4. Invest in a humidifier

When it’s cold outside, water evaporates off the surface of your skin faster and easier. Prevent dryness this season by adding moisture into your house with a humidifier. Using a humidifier helps your skin recover from any damage the dry air has caused, giving your body a chance to rehydrate. Purchase one or multiple and run them in the rooms you most frequently spend time in. Placing one in your bedroom is a foolproof way to keep your skin supple and moist. Plus, it’s particularly useful if you plan on blasting the heat this winter.

5. Switch up your diet

Did you know, eating healthy during the winter can affect your skin? For example, food or supplements containing omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids can improve and reduce dry skin. To help moisturize your skin from the inside out, include fish oil and flaxseed oil into your diet, found in foods like salmon, walnuts and soybeans. Also, it’s essential you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables during the cold season. With illnesses and infections on the rise, eating fruits like berries will provide your body with vital vitamins and antioxidants that your skin needs to stay healthy during the winter. Having a balanced diet will boost your immune system and help keep your skin glowing all winter long.

So, what are you waiting for? Pick up a thicker moisturizer, a new humidifier and some of your favorite berries to help combat frustrating chapped lips and skin. Following these winter skincare tips will help reduce irritation while keeping you healthy and moisturized all winter long!
